Assorted American Sources:
An best starting place for any genealogy and regional history research is the gigantic, free,
volunteer operated website: www.RootsWeb.com
Two free sites with source records are: www.distantcousin.com & www.gencircles.com
Excellent commercial collections of the U.S. Census and other databases are:
www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com
Much came from death records of Ohio, Iowa marriage records, Social Security Death Index
and U.S. Census records, family letters, and family photographs.
The U.S Census was valuable yet less useful than expected. The Poots arrived in 1887,
but the 1890 census was destroyed and therefore unavailable. Until recently, none of the
family members appeared in census indices for 1900 and 1910. The 1920 and 1930
indices give incomplete listings for the family. Several essential family records were
located by intensive searches through thousands of records. The 1900 census recorded
the family name as "Proot", and in 1920 as "Poal".
The Library of Congress of the USA has a vast and rapidly growing collection of millions of
photographs and documents online. Anyone doing historical research should visit these
collections. There are multiple collections, the most useful one is called American
Memory. Websites: www.loc.gov and memory.loc.gov
Another of their useful collections is the "Prints & Photographs Division >> Prints &
Photographs Online Catalog" at web address: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/pphome.html
"Dutch Immigrant Women in the United States, 1880-1920" by Suzanne M. Sinke. 376
pages. Published 2002 by University of Illinois Press. This is an interesting book about
Dutch-American society. Although it was not a significant resource in my research, it
should help many family historians gain a greater understanding of Dutch-American life.
You can preview the book online at: http://www.press.uillinois.edu/epub/books/sinke/
Sinke has also written a book of more general interest titled, "A Century of European
Migrations, 1830-1930."
Records of JW Poot's ministries with the Reformed Church in America (RCA) were found in
these official RCA publications by Russell L. Gasero, their Archivist.
"Historical Directory of the Reformed Church in America, 1628-1992". Churches volume,
185 pages. Ministers volume, 441 pages.
"Guide to Local Church Records in the Archives of the Reformed Church in America and
Other Repositories", 28 pages.
"History Helps from the Archives of the RCA", 51 pages, ver 3.0, January 1994.
These can be found in PDF format at the website: www.rca.org
The following pages give sources used for each chapter of the biography.
