CHICAGO, COLLEGE AND MARRIAGE
There is an overwhelming wealth of information about Chicago and its history.
Details of WF Poot's studies at the University of Chicago came from his notes and family
recollections. The University Registrar took a look for records in the basement of an old
building but could not find any Poot records. He was not surprised, as many of the very
old files are out of order, damaged, or lost.
Confirmation of the accelerated college degree process was found in: "The Chicago
College Plan", C.S. Boucher. University of Chicago Press, 1935.
The University of Chicago has created an extensive on-line "Digital Library" which has
many fine Chicago History articles and excellent links to other resources. The web
address is: http://ecuip.lib.uchicago.edu
Michael Douma, a talented student at Hope College, searched the Joint Archives of Holland
and found a copy of the "History of The First Reformed Church of Gano" (G-1619) and a
copy of the church vote to call for Rev. JW Poot.
Some useful obituary records were sent by e-mail from the dedicated volunteers at the
South Suburban Geneological and Historical Society: www.rootsweb.com/~ssghs
Information about the Dutch in Chicago came from writings by Robert P. Swierenga, the
foremost historian of the Dutch in America. His book "Dutch Chicago: The History of the
Hollanders in the Windy City" contains two brief mentions of the Poots on pages 287 and
326. Copies of several of Swierenga's lectures and magazine articles can be found at his
web site - www.swierenga.com/pubs.html
Information about the Moody Bible Institute came from their website - www.moody.edu
Their Registrar was able to locate an old filecard about WF Poot and this gave some dates
and addresses for both WF and JW Poot.
The Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College has extensive archives about Moody, his
church, and his Bible School. They also have files about R.A. Torrey and James Gray. Their
website is: www.wheaton.edu/bgc/archives
A detailed analysis of religious conditions in Chicago and the evangelism of Dwight Lyman
Moody can be found in: "The Chicago Revival, 1876: Society and Revivalism in a
Nineteenth-Century City", by Darrel M. Robertson. Publisher: The Scarecrow Press, Inc.
Metuchen, N.J. 1989.
A good source of Illinois history and genealogy is at Illinois Trails - www.iltrails.org
Their section about Cook County/Chicago is - www.iltrails.org/cook
Many photos can be found at the State of Illinois Gallery - www.illinois.gov/gallery/
Several libraries and museums in Northern Illinois have pooled their resources to create a
searchable website of old photographs, mostly scanned from postcards. Pictures have
informative annotations. Many useful pictures were supplied by the Lake County
Historical Museum. The web address is: www.DigitalPast.org
Many photos are from the Library of Congress, particlarly the collections of the Detroit
Publishing Co. and the Chicago Daily News Collection, 1903-1933. Select "List All
Collections" at the websute: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/
