Views of Grand Rapids
The heart of downtown was known as Campau Square after the
town founder and original owner. This picture from the 1890’s
shows a large Foster and Stevens furniture showroom. The
streetcars were electrified in 1890, and their overhead power
cables are visible in the photo.
This 1915 panorama shows some of the many bridges linking
the city across the Grand River. Many industrial businesses
located beside the river. It is ironic to see the Wrigley’s
advertisment proclaim “Delicious and Refreshing” next to the
polluted river and smoky air.
