Dutch minister from the Netherlands. Since he had separated from the
Dutch national church, he probably selected this Presbyterian Church in
his desire to find a compatible congregation.
He remained at the Second Presbyterian Church until at least April 1891.
A Presbytery meeting at Edwardsburg, several miles southwest of
Kalamazoo and near the Calvin Center, recorded the following:
"April 18, 1891- Formerly of Holland Presbyterian Church, who withdrew
to establish the Free Christian Church, has his name stricken from
Presbytery at meeting in Edwardsburg this week."
It was not indicated if he withdrew from the denomination or was moving
to another synod within the church. The Poot family apparently
remained in Kalamazoo until late in the summer of 1891. When they did
move, they went 50 miles north to Grand Rapids.
The Second Presbyterian Church on Dutton Street was unable to locate
another Dutch speaking minister in the Presbyterian Church. As a result,
in June 1892, the congregation changed their denomination to the
Reformed Church of America. At that time the church's name was
changed to the Fourth Reformed Church of Kalamazoo.
