Job married Neeltje Burghoorn. Dina's brother Johannes J Poot, age 17, came
in 1910 to Grand Rapids to live with his older brother H.J. Poot.
In 1922, a Jan Poot was paid by his employer to come to Los Angeles. His
relationship, if any, is unknown. A minister named Poot traveled to Mexico as
a missionary. In 1954 a family of 10 or 12 Poots immigrated by ship from De
Lier, Zuid-Holland to North America. This might be the family of Arie Poot
who is listed in the chapter "Current Poots". They may have disembarked in
Nova Scotia, but their final destination is not known.
There are a few Irish and English with the name Poat, some of whom
immigrated to Kentucky at an early date. The British and Irish Poats are
probably unrelated to the Dutch Poots, but it is possible that some Poots fled
to England during the Inquisition in the 1500's and adopted an anglicized
spelling. Delft and Rotterdam had a number of English residents over the
centuries- soldiers, traders, writers, and religious and political fugitives. The
Dutch had conflicted opinions of the English, but were aware of Britain as a
potential temporary refuge during times of trouble. The geographic
separation of the Poats from the Netherlands for hundreds of years could
make any Dutch connection difficult to verify.
