one person was sometimes recorded in different towns. A family might have
moved a short distance from the family church, but would continue to use the
same church for baptisms, weddings, and funerals. Most individual Poot
ancestors will appear in the historical records of more than one of these
                  places.

The Poots have been sufficiently prominent over the centuries to have some
streets named after them. Although I have not verified the name origins for
all of the Poot streets, it is likely that most are named after the family. Most
of these are in Delfland, and the others are in places where Poots have lived.
Here is a list of “poot” street names and the cities they are in:

When searching public records, it is essential that you look for all of the
spelling variations of a person's name. Otherwise, many important records
will not be found. Some of these spelling variations are the result of
transcription errors, but many are a reflection of the notoriously
unstandardized spelling of the Dutch language. Fortunately the Poot family
name was almost never misspelled in the public records, although the given
                  names showed some variations.

The parents of Jan Willem Poot were Jan Poot and Lammerdina Karmiggel
(pronounced similar to Carmichael). Her first name is sometimes spelled
Lamberdina. Her last name is extremely rare in the Dutch records, and may
be from Britain where Carmichael is a common Scottish name. The Dutch
sometimes interchange the use of K and C in their spelling. Karmiggel with a
"K" is often alphabetized under the letter "C". The public records for
Lammerdina alone show the following spelling variations for her last name:
                         Karmiggel Karmighel Harmighel
                         Karmigel Karmigchel
                         Karnigel Karmichel Carmichel
There are even more variations that may have been used by her ancestors.
The current spelling used by the remaining family members is Karmiggelt. A
national survey of all the Dutch phone directories for 1993 showed only 8
listings of this name. There were no listings for the other likely spellings.

The paternal grandparents of JW Poot were Job Poot and Ingetje Sonneveld.
The Poot and Sonneveld families seemed to get along very well. There were
at least 13 marriages between these two families. Ingetje's first name was
also misspelled as Engtje in the Dutch records. The common interchanges of
S/Z and D/T give her last name four known variations -
                         Sonneveld Zonneveld Sonnevelt Zonnevelt
